Rising River Levels in Saxony Amid Heavy Rainfall

Saxony is currently grappling with significant flooding due to persistent heavy rainfall. The Elbe and Neisse rivers have reached the second-highest warning level, prompting concerns about further escalation.

In response, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation. There is a slight easing of water levels in the Neisse, while the Elbe's rise has been more moderate.

Despite the increase, the Elbe remains below the most critical alarm stage, offering a glimmer of hope for the affected areas. Historically, the Elbe's normal level is 1.42 meters, but it has surged to 5.62 meters, still well below the catastrophic 9.40 meters recorded during the 2002 flood.

Meanwhile, the White Elster in Gera is within its normal range, although past events have shown its potential for severe flooding. The situation escalated dramatically for a woman in Görlitz who fell into the Neisse while checking its level.

Fortunately, she was rescued after being carried almost a kilometer downstream. The incident underscores the perilous nature of the current high waters.

In Dresden, the collapse of the Carolabrücke has caused the Elbe's level to rise further, raising concerns about potential overflow. The Technical Relief Agency (THW) is on standby to assist affected regions in Germany and neighboring countries, highlighting the widespread impact of the current weather system.

Residents are urged to prepare for potential emergencies by securing essential supplies and staying informed through official channels. As the heavy rains persist, the authorities continue to monitor the rivers and provide necessary support to mitigate the impact of this severe weather event.
