Doctors across Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Munich are striking to demand better pay and working conditions. Over 60,000 doctors are participating in the nationwide action, affecting more than 15 municipal hospitals.

Emergency care remains guaranteed, but routine procedures are being delayed. The doctors, represented by the Marburger Bund union, are calling for an 8.5% salary increase and a reform of shift work schedules.

The union's Cathrin Hübner highlights issues such as doctor shortages, inflation, and excessive bureaucracy. Dirk Köcher, a negotiator for the VKA, argues that hospitals are already struggling financially and that doctors will receive a 4% pay rise in 2024. Negotiations are set to continue in Berlin on September 17 and 18.
