Doctors Across Germany Demand Better Pay and Working Conditions

Thousands of doctors across Germany have taken part in a warning strike to demand an 8.5% salary increase and significant reforms to their shift and rotating shift work. The Marburg Association, representing the physicians, has organized these demonstrations after two unsuccessful rounds of negotiations with the municipal employers' associations (VKA).

The largest rally, held in Frankfurt, saw 3,000 participants, while Munich and Nuremberg were also focal points of the strike. In total, 60,000 doctors nationwide have shown their support for the cause.

The doctors are also pushing for better compensation for on-call duties and addressing the chronic staff shortages that leave them overworked and stressed. The VKA has labeled the demands as excessive, but union leaders like Susanne Johna emphasize the need for constructive negotiations to resolve these pressing issues.

Despite the ongoing strike, emergency services remain operational, as the union has ensured agreements for essential care. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for September 17 and 18 in Berlin, where it is hoped that both parties can reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
