The final report of the Grenfell Tower fire inquiry has revealed a series of failures and systematic dishonesty that contributed to the tragedy. The Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (TMO) was criticised for its pattern of concealment and failure to address fire safety concerns. The report highlighted that the initial motive for cladding was to improve the tower's appearance rather than energy efficiency, with cost being a primary concern.
Survivors described the scene as a horror film, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea failed to provide adequate emergency accommodation. The report also emphasised the long-lasting trauma experienced by survivors, bereaved families, and evacuees.
The chairman of the inquiry called for a new construction regulator and improved building regulations guidance. The report not only criticises the companies and authorities involved but also highlights the failures of the central government to address the risks posed by combustible cladding and tighten fire safety regulations.
The report is expected to lead to criminal investigations and potential charges for corporate manslaughter and other offences.
