He stated that he faced intense pressure and threats before signing the document, which he handed to Parliamentary President Jorge Rodríguez, recognizing Nicolás Maduro as the election winner. González Urrutia fled to Spain, seeking asylum shortly after the ordeal.
The election, held in July, saw the government-aligned electoral commission declaring Maduro the winner with 52% of the vote. However, the opposition, convinced of González Urrutia's victory, published counter-results supporting their claim.
The United States, the European Union, and several South American countries have refused to recognize Maduro’s victory, demanding detailed election results. Meanwhile, the European Parliament has passed a resolution recognizing González Urrutia as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
This resolution, though symbolic, urges the EU to support González Urrutia and calls for sanctions against Venezuela's National Electoral Council. The situation has exacerbated tensions between the Venezuelan government and the international community, with accusations of coercion and manipulation further complicating the political landscape.
