In 2023, Germany witnessed a significant increase in drowning deaths, with 353 fatalities recorded by the end of summer, up from 278 in the previous year. This marks the highest number in five years.

The majority of these incidents occurred in rivers, lakes, and seas, with the North and Baltic Seas seeing a particularly alarming rise in drownings. Sudden cardiovascular problems and high temperatures were frequently cited as contributing factors.

Men accounted for three-quarters of the victims, with many over the age of 50. Despite repeated warnings and appeals, many individuals did not exercise sufficient caution while swimming or engaging in water sports. The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) emphasized the importance of preventive measures and the need for more lifeguards at popular swimming sites.

The tragic trend underscores the necessity for continued public awareness and safety initiatives to prevent future drownings.
