Afghanistan's Economic Crisis Under Taliban Rule

Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghanistan has faced an escalating economic and humanitarian crisis. Unemployment has more than doubled, and nearly one-third of the population is now grappling with severe food shortages.

The World Health Organization reports that half of the Afghan population lives in poverty, with 80% of households surviving on less than a dollar per person daily. Economically, the country has seen a sharp decline, with the GDP shrinking by 20% in 2021 and an additional 6% in 2022. The United Nations warns that aid funds are depleting, with over $2 billion still needed for 2024. Internationally, the Taliban remains isolated due to human rights violations and their historical ties to Al-Qaeda, and no nation has officially recognized their government.
