Tensions Rise as Venezuela Arrests Another American for Alleged Plot

Venezuelan authorities have detained a fourth U.S. citizen on allegations of conspiracy against the government. The individual was arrested in Caracas for taking photos of critical infrastructure, including electrical facilities, oil installations, and military units. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello claimed the detainee was involved in a plot targeting President Nicolás Maduro, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, and himself.

This arrest follows the detention of three other Americans, two Spaniards, and a Czech, all accused of similar conspiracies. Over 400 U.S.-made rifles were reportedly seized. The U.S., Spain, and the Czech Republic deny any involvement in the alleged coup attempt.

Relations between Venezuela and the U.S., as well as Spain, have been tense since Maduro's controversial re-election in late July. Despite allegations of electoral fraud by the opposition, Maduro was declared the winner. In response, the U.S. imposed sanctions on high-ranking Venezuelan officials. Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia fled to Spain to avoid arrest, further straining diplomatic ties. Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles recently called Venezuela a 'dictatorship,' prompting Venezuela to recall its ambassador from Spain.

While the U.S. recognizes González Urrutia as the legitimate winner, Spain and other EU countries have yet to acknowledge Maduro's victory, demanding a full release of election results. The situation remains volatile, with international scrutiny and diplomatic tensions escalating.
