Rising Student Housing Costs in German Cities

Student housing costs in Germany have surged, with Hamburg's average rent reaching 620 euros per month, up 3.3% from last year. The Moses Mendelssohn Institute advocates for more budget-oriented housing and lower construction costs, as even non-profit providers struggle to offer affordable rents.

Nationwide, shared flat rents average 489 euros, with Munich being the priciest at 790 euros, followed by Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg. The BAföG housing allowance of 380 euros is insufficient in most cities.

The rise in costs is attributed to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict. The situation is dire, especially for students with late admissions or visa issues, who face greater market pressures.
