Portugal is facing a severe wildfire crisis that has resulted in significant loss of life and property. The fires have claimed at least seven lives and injured over 50 people.

More than 106,000 hectares of land have been destroyed, and hundreds have been evacuated from affected areas. The regions of Aveiro, Porto, Coimbra, and Viseu are among the hardest hit.

Over 5,300 emergency responders are battling more than 20 major fires, with additional support from firefighting planes and personnel from EU countries, including Spain. The situation is exacerbated by difficult terrain and strong winds, making firefighting efforts challenging.

Transportation has been heavily disrupted, with closed highways, rural roads, and halted train and long-distance bus services. The sky over several communities has darkened with smoke, prompting authorities to urge citizens to stay indoors and conserve water.

Four suspects have been arrested for arson. Prime Minister António Costa has warned of tough days ahead, as the wildfire alerts remain in place.

The country continues to receive international aid to combat the blazes and mitigate further damage.
