Oktoberfest Security Measures Amid Knife Ban Delays

Despite recent incidents, there will be no knife ban around the Oktoberfest grounds on the Theresienwiese in Munich. The Ministry of the Interior has been too slow in issuing the necessary legal ordinance, which requires collaboration with other departments and consultations with municipal organizations.

As a result, any introduction of weapon and knife ban zones under the Weapons Act is not expected until after the start of Oktoberfest in 2024. Consequently, the Munich District Administration Office cannot establish a knife ban zone this year.

However, extensive security measures are in place for the festival. These include 600 police officers, 40 metal detectors, and up to 1,500 security personnel.

The grounds are also monitored by over 50 video cameras, and access points are secured with barriers. Additionally, there are bans on large bags, bottles, and any items that could potentially cause harm, with violators facing fines of up to 1,000 euros.

Despite the lack of a specific knife ban, these measures aim to maintain Oktoberfest's reputation as the safest folk festival in the world.
