Claudia Sheinbaum's Stance on Mexico's Drug War

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's incoming president, has vehemently opposed the idea of a 'war' against drug cartels, citing it would only exacerbate violence. Her stance comes amidst escalating conflicts within the Sinaloa cartel, originally founded by 'El Chapo' Guzmán. The infighting, particularly between the factions led by 'El Mayo' Zambada and Los Chapitos, has intensified since Zambada's capture and incarceration in the United States.

Since the anti-drug war declared by former President Felipe Calderón in 2006, Mexico has seen a staggering toll of approximately 450,000 deaths and over 100,000 disappearances linked to cartel violence. Sheinbaum, set to take office on October 1, advocates for investigations and strategic security measures over outright confrontation.

Recent clashes in Sinaloa have resulted in over 30 deaths, including two soldiers, and the deployment of 2,200 military personnel to contain the violence. The confrontations have disrupted daily life, leading to economic losses and widespread fear among residents.

Despite the deployment of additional security forces, including the National Guard, the violence persists, with both criminal factions engaging in open warfare and targeting security personnel. The Mexican government, under President López Obrador, continues to prioritize protecting civilians and reducing hostilities through intelligence and strategic reinforcements.

Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval acknowledge the complexities of the conflict, emphasizing the need for a sustained and multifaceted approach.
