Russia's Disinformation Campaigns Bolster the AfD in Germany

Russia is leveraging disinformation campaigns to bolster the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, aiming for a 20 percent polling rate. The Moscow-based Social Design Agency (SDA) conducts these campaigns on behalf of the Kremlin, disseminating false narratives and stirring societal divisions. This effort includes blaming Germany's economic woes on its support for Ukraine and portraying right-wing parties as 'peaceful' alternatives.
The SDA has identified German celebrities sympathetic to Russia, such as Dieter Bohlen and Alina Lipp, using their influence to legitimize disinformation. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is countering these efforts, but the challenge remains significant.
The Kremlin's strategy extends beyond Germany. For instance, Russia has attempted to undermine the European Union's credibility, particularly targeting EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia's aim has been to destabilize Western alliances and democracy itself.
In response, the German government has created the 'Hybrid' task force, integrating experts to tackle disinformation. This group reports directly to the crisis team, aiming to identify and counteract these covert operations swiftly. Despite progress, such as banning Russia Today (RT) Deutsch, combating the Kremlin's 'lie machine' continues to be a formidable task.
