France Appoints New EU Commissioner Amid Dispute

Thierry Breton, the French EU Commissioner for Industry and Digital Policy, has unexpectedly resigned. His departure stems from a dispute with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who requested his removal without prior personal discussion.

Breton criticized von der Leyen's leadership style, particularly her unilateral decisions regarding key appointments and the distribution of roles within the new Commission. As a result, France has nominated Stéphane Séjourné, the current Foreign Minister and former leader of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament, as Breton's successor.

Séjourné is expected to focus on industrial sovereignty and European competitiveness, enjoying the trust of both President Emmanuel Macron and von der Leyen. This move underscores Macron's intention to maintain significant influence over EU affairs, despite the political instability at home.
