Austria is grappling with severe flooding, leading to the declaration of disaster areas across several municipalities. Heavy rainfall has resulted in the Ottenstein reservoir nearing overflow, raising concerns of a 100-year flood in the Waldviertel region and significant flooding along the Kamp, a tributary of the Danube.
The Danube itself faces a 20- to 30-year flood scenario. Rainfall amounts have already reached up to 150 millimeters, with expectations of 230 millimeters overall.
State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner has warned of historic challenges ahead, as emergency services prepare for possible evacuations. The energy supplier EVN is releasing water from the reservoir to mitigate the situation.
The flooding has caused substantial disruptions, including power outages and the suspension of train services. Numerous municipalities are particularly affected, with high water levels expected around the Kamp and other rivers.
In Vienna, public transport has been restricted, and several underground lines are impacted. The crisis has prompted a massive response, with over 20,000 firefighters deployed and assistance requested from the Bundeswehr.
Tragically, a firefighter has lost their life during the operations. Neighboring countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania are also experiencing severe flooding, with fatalities reported in Romania.
The widespread disaster underscores the urgency of coordinated efforts and community preparedness in the face of such natural calamities.
