Thuringia Excels in Student Housing Availability

Thuringia stands out in Germany with the highest occupancy rate of student dormitories at 17%. The Thuringian Student Union provides 7,700 places across 71 facilities.

Despite ongoing renovations, the demand for housing often surpasses availability. To address this, federal and state governments are investing millions in dormitory improvements in cities like Jena, Erfurt, Ilmenau, and Nordhausen.

The attractive rent of 260 euros per month is significantly lower than the BAföG housing allowance of 380 euros. Current renovations include House D in Ilmenau and the Plauener Weg dormitory in Erfurt, with plans for a new building in Nordhausen.

Overall, investments amount to 71 million euros, with an additional 24 million euros earmarked for further enhancements by 2030.
