Saxony Election: Results Confirmed Amidst Vote Manipulation Scandal

The final result of the Saxony election has been confirmed by the State Electoral Commission. This comes after the discovery of nearly 130 manipulated ballots favoring the far-right party Freie Sachsen. The manipulation was detected in Dresden and its surrounding areas, leading to an investigation by the General Prosecutor's Office for electoral fraud. Despite the tampering, the invalidated ballots did not alter the seat distribution in the state parliament.

Minister President Michael Kretschmer's CDU narrowly secured the most votes, followed closely by the AfD, which is classified as far-right by the state’s constitutional protection agency. Other parties that gained representation include the newly formed Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), the SPD, the Greens, and the Left Party. Notably, the Free Voters also secured a seat through a direct mandate.

The investigation into the vote tampering intensified with a search of a 44-year-old suspect's residence in Dresden. This individual is suspected of altering both state and municipal election ballots to benefit Freie Sachsen. Despite these irregularities, the confirmed seat allocation remains unchanged: CDU 41, AfD 40, BSW 15, SPD 10, Greens 7, Left 6, and Free Voters 1.
