China's Retirement Age Reform Amid Demographic Challenges

In response to a pressing demographic crisis, China is set to gradually raise its retirement age, a significant shift in policy after decades of stability. The reform will commence in 2025 and is expected to reach full implementation by 2040. For male workers, the age will increase from 60 to 63, while female workers will see changes from 50-55 to 55-58, depending on their job classification.
This adjustment is driven by declining birth rates and an aging population, which pose serious risks to the country's economy, healthcare, and social systems. To further support these changes, the minimum years of employment required for retirement will rise from 15 to 20 by 2030. The government aims to alleviate pension budget deficits across 11 provinces and enhance labor force participation.
Employees will have the option to negotiate retirement terms with their employers, allowing for some flexibility in when they retire. While the long-term benefits of these reforms are anticipated to stabilize productivity growth, concerns about increased job competition have been voiced by many citizens.
As global life expectancy continues to rise, China's retirement age remains relatively low compared to countries like Japan and South Korea. This policy adjustment aligns China with these nations, reflecting a broader trend towards extending working lives in the face of demographic shifts.
