The number of academic staff at German universities has decreased, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. By the end of 2023, there were approximately 425,800 academic employees, a 0.6% drop from the previous year's 428,500.

Notably, one-third of these staff members worked part-time as guest lecturers, adjuncts, or research assistants, while two-thirds were employed full-time. This full-time contingent included about 51,900 professors and 214,900 research and artistic staff members.

However, a significant portion of these full-time employees, around 186,100, were on temporary contracts, representing two-thirds of the total. Only a third had permanent positions, totaling 95,500 individuals.

Despite this decline in academic staff, the overall employment at universities and university hospitals rose to 792,300 by the end of 2023, marking a 0.6% increase. This growth was confined to non-academic roles in administration, libraries, technical services, and nursing, which saw a 2.1% rise, reaching 366,600 employees.
