Severe Forest Fire at the Brocken

A severe forest fire broke out at the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, leading to the evacuation of about 500 people. The fire spread unchecked, affecting areas such as Königsberg and the Harz National Park.

Firefighters, along with firefighting planes and helicopters, were deployed to combat the blaze. The fire site was identical to a previous one in 2022. Measures such as mixed forests and firebreaks are being implemented for fire prevention.

The firefighting efforts were made difficult due to the challenging conditions, including strong winds. The Brocken, a popular tourist destination, was closed off to the public.

The fire posed a threat to munitions-contaminated areas. Efforts to control the fire are expected to continue for several days, with hopes of ending with a change in weather conditions.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. In addition to the fire at the Brocken, other forest fires were reported in Oranienbaum and Gottberg, with firefighting teams working to extinguish them.
