Low Voter Turnout: Presidential Election in Algeria Comes to an End

The presidential election in Algeria has concluded with a low voter turnout, prompting the extension of polling hours. Despite free public transportation and extended opening times, only 26.46% of eligible voters participated, a seven percent decrease compared to the previous election.

Incumbent Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who hoped for a higher turnout, is the clear favorite. However, his challengers, Abdelaali Hassani and Youssef Aouchiche, are considered unlikely to succeed.

The election took place amidst ongoing protests by the 'Hirak' movement, which opposes the government's repression of human rights and its alliance with the military. Amnesty International has criticized the government's zero-tolerance policy towards dissenting opinions and its climate of fear and censorship.

Tebboune, known for his authoritarian rule, ran as an independent candidate and received support from major political groups, including the FLN and Al-Bina. The election marks a continuation of the political turmoil that began in 2019 when massive protests erupted against former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's bid for a fifth term.

Despite the repression, the hope for democracy and change remains in Algeria.
