FDP Stands Firm Against Left-Green Financial Changes in Budget Draft

As the Bundestag commences budget discussions, the FDP parliamentary group, led by Christoph Meyer, remains resolute in rejecting calls from coalition partners for deviations from the debt brake, emphasizing a constitutionally compliant budget. Dismissing proposals for modifications to the debt brake by the SPD and Greens, the FDP insists on maintaining record investment levels within the constraints of the debt brake.

The budget draft for 2025 outlines total expenses of 488.61 billion euros, with a need for fresh loans amounting to 51.3 billion euros, slightly higher than in 2024. A 12 billion euro financial gap remains in the draft, addressed through a global reduction in expenditure, yet specifics on this saving have not been defined.

The Union faction criticizes the government's budget agreement, accusing it of resorting to additional debts, financial maneuvers, and questionable legal tactics. Specific grievances include plans for capital increase at Deutsche Bahn, a state loan to the company, and the aforementioned 12 billion euro shortfall rectified through a global expenditure cut.

The Bundestag initiates debates on the budget proposal this Tuesday, with final approval slated for late November.
