Boeing's 'Starliner' Mission Extended to Eight Months in Space

Originally planned for a week in space, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Barry Wilmore are now set to spend eight months aboard the International Space Station. Due to technical issues with the Starliner capsule, the astronauts will not return to Earth with it, but instead via SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft.

The decision to extend their stay was made by NASA Chief Bill Nelson due to health risks posed by thruster problems and helium leaks during launch. With Boeing's Starliner facing multiple setbacks, including a failed 2019 test flight, the repair costs are estimated at $1 billion.

The trust in Starliner's safety has dwindled after recent engine issues, impacting Boeing's reputation and potentially delaying future crewed missions until 2024. Despite uncertainties surrounding the Starliner program, NASA remains committed to ensuring crew safety and spacecraft reliability.
