The World Health Organization (WHO) has successfully completed the first phase of a large-scale polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip. Over 187,000 children under the age of ten were vaccinated in the central Gaza Strip from September 1st to 3rd.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the campaign. Following the WHO's urging, Israel agreed to 'humanitarian pauses' in its conflict with Hamas to vaccinate over 640,000 children against polio in the Gaza Strip.
This came after the first case of polio in 25 years was detected in a baby in the Gaza Strip. The next phase of the campaign aims to vaccinate an estimated 340,000 children in the southern part of the Palestinian territory over the next five days.
From September 9th to 11th, an additional 150,000 children in the northern part of the Gaza Strip will be vaccinated, marking the end of the campaign. The goal is to immunize at least 90% of children in the Gaza Strip to prevent the spread of the disease.
