According to reports, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is considering appointing an Italian right-wing politician as her deputy. Raffaele Fitto, a member of Italy's Fratelli d'Italia party, is reportedly being considered for the role of Vice President for Economy and Coronavirus Recovery Assistance.

This would mark the first time a right-wing politician holds a key economic position in the EU Commission. While the report has not been confirmed by the Brussels authorities, criticism may arise over Fitto's appointment, particularly due to Italy's significant reliance on EU funds for COVID-19 recovery.

In addition to Fitto, von der Leyen is said to be considering four other executive vice presidents, including Estonia's Kaja Kallas, Latvia's Valdis Dombrovskis, Spain's Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, and France's Thierry Breton. The composition of the new Commission has also faced criticism for its lack of gender balance.
