US urges Israel and Hamas to reach ceasefire agreement

The US government has called on both Israel and Hamas to show flexibility in reaching a ceasefire agreement in the conflict. The spokesperson for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, stated that there are still dozens of hostages in Gaza waiting for an agreement that will allow them to return home.

He emphasized that it is time to finalize this agreement. Both sides need to find reasons to say yes instead of no and demonstrate flexibility.

The US government will continue working with mediators from Egypt and Qatar to achieve an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages. One contentious issue is Israel's plan to keep soldiers stationed at the border between the southern Gaza Strip and Egypt, which the US government opposes.

The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life, with Hamas fighters killing 1,205 people and taking 251 hostages in Israel's attack on October 7. The US charges Hamas leaders with terrorism in relation to this attack and pushes for a final truce to end the Palestinian deaths.
