The German Armed Forces officially launch the cutting-edge air defense system, Iris-T SLM, at Todendorf in Schleswig-Holstein. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, both from the SPD, will be present at the event to deliver speeches.
This system, produced by Diehl Defense, is a crucial component of the European Sky Shield initiative initiated by Scholz. Iris-T SLM is designed to protect populated areas, buildings, and installations by engaging drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles up to 40 kilometers away.
Six systems have been ordered by the Bundeswehr, with the German Parliament's Budget Committee allocating up to 950 million euros for this purpose. Ukraine, supported financially by Germany, has already received four such systems for defense against Russian air attacks since October 2023, with a promise of eight more from the German government.
Additionally, an Iris-T training center in Todendorf will educate partner nations of the European Sky Shield initiative starting in 2026.
