US Urges Israel and Hamas to Cease Fire

The US government has called on both Israel and Hamas to show flexibility in their efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement, in order to free the 97 remaining hostages in Gaza, 33 of whom are believed to be dead.

Egypt and Qatar are mediating the negotiations. One of the main sticking points is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to station Israeli soldiers at the border between southern Gaza and Egypt, which the US government opposes.

The recent discovery of six hostages in a tunnel in Rafah, including one American citizen, has increased urgency for an agreement. Hamas has threatened to kill the hostages if Israeli soldiers approach.

The UK has suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to concerns of humanitarian law violations. Protests against Netanyahu's government have grown after the deaths of the hostages.

The Gaza health ministry reports that 40,786 Palestinians have been killed and 94,224 injured since the October 7th attacks. Polio vaccinations are ongoing in Gaza, with the WHO hoping to reach 640,000 Palestinian children.
