Polio Vaccinations in Gaza Exceed Goals, Despite Challenges

The World Health Organization's polio vaccination campaign in Gaza has exceeded its initial goal, with 161,030 children vaccinated in the first two days. Despite challenges caused by displacements and overcrowded shelters, the campaign plans to reach 490,000 more children in the south and north.

The recent discovery of the first polio case in 25 years highlights the importance of reaching over 90% of children to prevent further spread. The campaign, conducted by the WHO and its partner agencies, aims to avert an epidemic in Gaza, where infectious diseases are on the rise due to the war and destruction of health infrastructure.

While the vaccination drive faces resistance from some distrustful of aid efforts, the UN-led effort continues to bring in doses and expand coverage to protect children in the midst of ongoing conflict and unsanitary conditions.
