Merz calls for radical reversal of asylum policy - little optimism before meeting

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called on the 'traffic light' coalition to change their restrictive immigration policy, following their poor election results in Saxony and Thuringia. If the coalition does not show willingness to make a 'fundamental correction' at the scheduled meeting with the Union on Tuesday, Merz sees no point in further discussions on a joint approach to migration policy.

Merz dampened expectations for the meeting, stating that his party is going in with little optimism. Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer said that dissatisfaction with high immigration numbers had driven many voters to the AfD, and called for a cross-party consensus on the issue.

The meeting will discuss measures such as border controls, the Dublin rules, deportations, and extending detention for deportation. The government plans to ban spring knives and exclude criminal migrants from protection.

The municipalities are also calling for stricter rules on migration.
