Tens of thousands rally for Mexico's proposed judicial reforms as critics warn of political bias

Tens of thousands of people in Mexico have shown their support for President López Obrador's judicial reform plan, which would allow for the election of judges. However, critics are concerned that this could lead to politically biased judges.

Protests against the reforms have also taken place, with opponents expressing their disagreement. The proposed changes, which include the elimination of the National Institute of Transparency, are expected to be voted on soon in the Congress, where the governing coalition holds a majority.

The first session of the Chamber of Deputies since the June elections, in which the president's party and allies won big, took place. A judge ruled that the discussion and vote on the reforms could not be held on Sunday, and the issue will now go before the Senate after the deputies vote.

The United States is one of the biggest critics of the proposal. López Obrador is in the last month of his six-year term, and the reforms have sparked strained ties with the US and Canada, as well as concerns among foreign investors.
