Bavaria's Interior Minister calls for further measures in migration policy

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann criticizes the inadequate proposals of the federal government on migration policy. He calls for central measures on a federal level to limit irregular migration into the European Union and Germany.

He also criticizes the proposed reduction of benefits for asylum seekers registered in another EU country. However, he welcomes the plan for stricter rules for criminal asylum seekers.

The federal government is responding to the suspected Islamist-motivated knife attack in Solingen by proposing stricter gun laws, measures against violent Islamism, and tightening residence and asylum laws. Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder calls for a reform of the asylum law to allow for rejections at the borders, return agreements, and expansion of safe countries of origin.

He doubts the seriousness of the federal government's willingness to engage in discussions. Migration law expert Pichl warns that benefit cuts for Dublin refugees could increase crime as it puts them in extreme distress.
