A volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland has created 'witch’s hair' glass splinters, clogging filters and injuring locals in Reykjanesbær. These sharp glass needles, called Nornahár, are caused by high eruption jets, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Agency.

Locals and officials have expressed astonishment at the phenomenon, with the Director of Sports Facilities stating that they have never seen anything like it before. Despite warnings about a contaminated military site, crowds continue to gather to take Instagram photos of the eruption.

The Blue Lagoon spa, which was evacuated, has since reopened. The Coast Guard is warning about approaching the eruption.

Iceland experiences an average of one eruption every 4-5 years, with the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption causing disruption to air travel.
