The Congo is suffering from Mpox: Can a global outbreak be prevented?

The Mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading to neighboring countries. A new, more contagious and deadlier virus variant (Clade Ib) has already spread to Sweden and Thailand.

There are two vaccines available, but only in Western industrialized countries. More than 800,000 people are fleeing to Goma, where relief organizations lack access to vaccines and resources.

The WHO has declared the outbreak a public health emergency and urgently calls for international support. The outbreak has also spread to Europe, leading to a global response.

It is crucial to engage high-risk groups, strengthen surveillance, and invest in vaccines. Trust in healthcare systems, avoiding discrimination, and rejecting travel restrictions are essential in addressing Mpox effectively.
