Öko-Test Evaluates Mouthwashes: The Best Products are Not Expensive

Mouthwashes are a valuable addition to oral hygiene routines, helping to reduce the risk of cavities and gum inflammation. They not only freshen breath but also prevent gum inflammation and reduce the risk of cavities.

Öko-Test evaluated 27 mouthwashes, with over half being recommended. The Bevola Mint and Dontodent antibacterial mouthwashes received top marks.

Fluoridated mouthwashes strengthen tooth enamel, promote remineralization, and are especially important for children and those with limited motor skills. However, some products contain concerning ingredients such as tea tree oil, chlorhexidine gluconate, methyl salicylate, and sodium lauryl sulfate, which can cause allergic reactions or mucosal irritations.

It is recommended to use mouthwash undiluted and hold it in the mouth for about 30 seconds after brushing. For children under six years old, mouthwash use is generally not recommended as they may accidentally swallow it.

Öko-Test found that a discount store product performed exceptionally well in terms of cleaning properties, further highlighting that the best mouthwashes do not have to be expensive.
