Germany deports criminal offenders to Afghanistan

Germany has deported 28 Afghan criminal offenders to Afghanistan in a charter flight organized by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This marks the first deportation since the Taliban takeover.

The decision to deport comes after knife attacks in Mannheim and Solingen. The deportees received 1,000 euros in cash.

The flight, operated by Qatar Airways, departed from Leipzig/Halle Airport. The Solingen knife attack is believed to have an Islamist background, according to the Federal Prosecutor's Office.

The deportation is part of Germany's efforts to address the security concerns posed by convicted criminals and terrorist threats. In the wake of the Solingen attack, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced measures such as reducing benefits for certain migrants and tightening gun laws.

The government's decision to deport these individuals has been met with both support and skepticism. While some politicians see it as a strengthening of the rule of law, others remain cautious about deportations to Afghanistan and the cooperation with the Taliban.
