Federal government agrees on migration and asylum package

The traffic light coalition has agreed on a comprehensive migration and asylum package that includes stronger deportation, tightening of gun laws, and faster transfers to other European countries. The package comes in response to the recent Solingen attack, in which the suspected attacker could not be deported earlier.

Talks with the states and the Union are planned, and a working group of the traffic light parties will meet next week. However, various parties have criticized the package for being insufficient, including the CDU, the police union, and the Richterbund.

Chancellor Scholz, despite speculation about early elections, expects a regular federal election in 2025. The Union is not yet convinced by the security plan and is calling for more. The Richterbund is also demanding more personnel in the debate on migration policy.

Chancellor Scholz has not fully adjusted to the new Ampel coalition, and the political landscape suggests that future coalitions will remain complicated. The Ampel coalition is expected to continue despite potential losses in the upcoming state elections.

Various scenarios, including premature federal elections or a coalition with the Union, are being considered. The self-destructive political style of the Ampel is expected to continue after the elections, with ongoing conflicts between the coalition parties in parliament.
