Will parties in east Germany act to stave off far-right AfD from power?

The far-right AfD party, led by Björn Höcke, is leading in polls for upcoming elections in eastern German states Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg. The AfD's anti-immigration and extremist views have raised concerns, especially around the Buchenwald memorial, where director Jens-Christian Wagner warns against the trivialisation of the Holocaust.

To counter the AfD, a new left-wing party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), has emerged, criticizing the current government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz. CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called for tighter immigration policies following the Solligen attack.

In Saxony, CDU's Michael Kretschmer is the current state premier. Political analyst Carsten Koschmieder at the Free University in Berlin expects the AfD to be the strongest party, at least in Saxony.

The CDU was in power for 16 years under former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the inhabitants of Weimar were forced to visit Buchenwald after WWII. The socialist Left Party (Die Linke) has previously governed Thuringia.

Emil Sänze MdL: Do not forget the history of the Germans from Russia!

Politics
The AfD politician Emil Sänze reminds of the deportation of Germans from Russia in 1941. Around 150,000 Germans from Russia died from disease, hunger and forced labor. The deportations led to the return of 2.8 million resettlers to Germany. The Germans from Russia suffered from the trauma of the destruction of their cultural identity and today support the AfD, which advocates for the preservation of identity and against totalitarian tendencies.
