Summer in Germany: DWD warns of heat across most of the country

Germany is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country. The northwest is being spared from the extreme heat, but the Alps are experiencing thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued heat warnings and provided behavioral tips to protect against the high temperatures. Surprisingly, temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are also expected in September.

The heatwave has resulted in record-breaking temperatures, with Cottbus being the hottest place in Germany at 35.5 degrees Celsius. As the summer temperatures continue to rise, experts warn that this might become the new normal, with dry and hot periods becoming more frequent.

This poses a significant threat to the stability of European forests. While many schools grant heat days for students, the guidelines for workplaces vary, with a three-step plan being implemented when temperatures exceed 26 degrees Celsius.

Heatwave for millions of students - but what about the workplace?

Environment
Heatwave is a childhood myth that delights millions of students. However, the legal situation is unclear as each federal state has its own rules. There is no guaranteed heatwave leave at the workplace, but employers must take measures. Air conditioning systems have a bad reputation in Germany, even though they are more environmentally friendly and could relieve the power grid.

Hot Late Summer: Is This the New Normal?

Environment
Geographer Elizaveta Felsche from LMU Munich explains that we need to get used to dry and hot periods. With a warming of 3 degrees, every second to third summer could look like 2003, with entire climate regions shifting northward. Forests will also change significantly, with hotter summers in the Alps.
