Canada Imposes 100% Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles

Canada has announced that it will impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles, matching tariffs introduced by the US and the EU. This move aims to counter Chinese companies' global oversupply efforts and protect the domestic auto industry.

In addition to the tariffs on electric vehicles, Canada will also impose a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum. The decision comes after a 30-day public consultation and is part of Canada's efforts to position itself as a critical part of the global EV supply chain.

Canada has also signed deals with top European automakers to bolster its domestic manufacturing. The US national security advisor has supported Canada's decision, and US President Biden has announced similar tariffs in May.

However, this announcement may worsen Canada-China ties and risk retaliation from China. Only Tesla's Chinese-made EVs are currently imported into Canada.
