NASA to Decide if Starliner Spacecraft is Safe Enough to Bring Astronauts Back

NASA is currently evaluating Boeing's Starliner spacecraft to determine if it is safe to bring back the two astronauts who have been stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) since June. The engineers are examining the performance of the Starliner thrusters and its ability to leave orbit.

Updated risk analyses will also play a role in NASA's decision. Boeing claims that the thruster tests have demonstrated that the Starliner can safely return the astronauts.

However, the spacecraft has encountered issues in its previous test flights. If NASA chooses SpaceX, the Starliner will return to Earth empty in September.

SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft has been successfully transporting astronauts to the ISS since 2020. NASA's final decision on the safety of the Starliner is highly anticipated.

Polaris Dawn, SpaceX's private spacewalk mission, will test new spacesuits and a Crew Dragon vehicle modified to open in space. The crew, including a billionaire, a retired fighter pilot, and two SpaceX engineers, will perform a 20-minute spacewalk in an oval-shaped orbit, reaching higher altitudes than since Apollo. They will conduct scientific experiments, including using an ultrasound device to monitor for nitrogen bubbles that could block blood flow, to inform future deep space missions, but..

How will the stuck Boeing Starliner astronauts perceive time after 6 months in space?

Technology
NASA astronauts Wilmore and Williams are stranded on the ISS after Boeing Starliner issues, facing a potential 6-month wait. Research on Antarctic crews at stations like Concordia suggests complex tasks can help time pass quickly, as 80% of responses indicated. But 3% reported time dragging during long nights. The astronauts are confined to a space equivalent to a Boeing 747, so better information on "when" and "why" could help them tolerate the uncertainty.
