Chip Giant TSMC's Major Project in Dresden Signals Growth of Semiconductor Industry in Germany

TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor are collaborating to build a 10 billion euro semiconductor factory in Dresden, with production set to begin in 2027. This investment follows other major industry projects in Germany, such as Intel's 30 billion euro investment in Magdeburg and Wolfspeed's 2.7 billion euro factory in Ensdorf.

The project in Dresden, known as 'European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company' (ESMC), is a significant milestone for the region, which is already a hub for the microelectronics industry. The region, referred to as 'Silicon Saxony', produces one-third of all chips manufactured in Europe.

The cluster of companies in Silicon Saxony benefits from knowledge and technology transfer, attracting skilled workers and generating substantial economic effects. However, there are debates about the level of government subsidies and the sustainability of the optimistic projections for the future of Silicon Saxony.

The success of the semiconductor industry is also influenced by global economic conditions and the availability of qualified professionals. While Germany aims to become more self-sufficient in microchip production by supporting the establishment of chip manufacturers like TSMC and Intel, concerns remain about the relocation of supply chain issues and exacerbating the shortage of skilled workers.
