August's Supermoon Lights up Night Skies Globally

August's supermoon, a rare Blue Moon, lit up night skies around the world. The term 'supermoon' is more popular than scientific, but it refers to when the moon appears larger and brighter due to its closer proximity to Earth.

This supermoon was the first of four lunar spectacles this year, with the next ones occurring in September, October, and November. The phenomenon can be seen through early Wednesday morning.

The supermoon coincided with a blue moon, which happens when there are four full moons in one season. Though the supermoon doesn't actually turn blue, it glowed red in some places due to wildfire smoke.

Other celestial highlights in September include a partial lunar eclipse, visible planets such as Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune, and the presence of constellations like Pegasus, Bootes, and Lyra.

Experts, including a research scientist and retired physics professor from CSU Channel Islands, as well as astronomical observer Vanessa Alarcon, explain the phenomenon. The supermoon can be viewed anywhere with a clear sky, with the moon appearing most striking when rising.
