The Left Party's Leadership Duo Resigns After Election Defeats

The leaders of the Left Party in Germany, Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan, are resigning after election defeats. Their party lost voters to the new party of Sahra Wagenknecht, the BSW, which won 6.2% of the votes.

In 2019, the Left Party had received 31% of the votes in Thuringia. Upcoming elections will also be held in Saxony and Brandenburg.

In the June European elections, the Left Party won just 2.7% of the votes. Wissler and Schirdewan will not be candidates at the party congress in Halle in October.

The resignation is seen as an opportunity for a fresh start for the Left Party in Brandenburg, while Thuringia's Minister President Ramelow calls for structural changes. The Berlin branch hopes for a turnaround with the leadership change, and Bodo Ramelow emphasizes the need for pragmatic politics.

The SPD sees a potential alliance with Wagenknecht's BSW in Thuringia. The CDU is divided on a coalition with the BSW on a regional level.

The BSW's conditions on war and peace pose a challenge for alliances, while the AfD gains in the polls ahead of the 2025 federal election.

Opinion polls are generally subject to uncertainties. Among other things, the weakening of party affiliations and increasingly short-term voting decisions make it difficult for opinion research institutes to weigh the collected data. Surveys only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not forecasts on the election outcome.
