Environmental Associations Call for Reduction of Billion-Euro Subsidies

BUND and DUH are demanding the reduction of climate-damaging subsidies, such as company cars, diesel, and flights, according to a government study. The reduction is controversial within the coalition.

BUND expert Löffelsend and VCD spokesman Müller-Görnert criticize the subsidy policy. The study reveals that numerous state subsidies have a high greenhouse gas impact, particularly in the transportation, agriculture, industry, energy, building, and forestry sectors.

The BUND, DUH, and VCD are calling for the abolition of climate-damaging subsidies such as diesel privileges, company car benefits, and energy tax advantages. The report shows that these subsidies lead to an additional 156 million tons of CO2 emissions by 2030. The majority of the subsidies are related to tax rebates for diesel, company cars, and commuting expenses.

The study also highlights the need to phase out inefficient subsidies for fossil fuels by 2025, as agreed upon by the G7 nations. The findings of the study have been met with criticism, as it was revealed that the German government withheld the results.
