Wildfires Rage in Greece and Turkey

Multiple wildfires are wreaking havoc in Greece and Turkey, with strong winds and dry conditions fueling the blazes. In Ioannina, Greece, a forest area is burning, and firefighters, vehicles, and helicopters are working tirelessly to combat the fire.

The Plaka area in Litochoro, Pieria, has been evacuated due to wildfires caused by strong winds. In Turkey, over 1,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed in Izmir, with hundreds of people evacuated.

Firefighters, the army, and Azerbaijan are assisting in the firefighting efforts. The extreme heatwave and record-breaking temperatures are exacerbating the situation.

The lack of management plans for forests and the accumulation of combustible material hinder targeted management and prevention efforts. The authorities warn of a high risk of wildfires in western Turkey.

Portugal has sent firefighters to help battle a fire in Madeira, and wildfires have also been reported in other parts of Greece.
