Green Party Leader Lang Opposes Gas Drilling Off Borkum

Green Party leader Lang and Federal Environment Minister Lemke criticize planned gas drilling off Borkum as a threat to the environment and climate goals. The drilling is to take place near the Wadden Sea National Park and with an 18-year permit from the Dutch energy company One-Dyas, extending under the seabed into German territory. Federal Minister of Economics Habeck wants to conclude an agreement with the Netherlands only after court rulings. The German Environmental Aid organization announces further legal steps. The drilling poses a significant risk to the delicate balance of the Wadden Sea and could jeopardize its UNESCO World Heritage status. The project has faced opposition from environmental organizations, island residents, and the local mayor. The gas drilling plans have also sparked concerns about potential earthquakes and the safety of drinking water on Borkum. Minister Habeck emphasizes the importance of protecting the marine and natural environment, while the LBEG, the state authority responsible for mining, sees no objections to the proposed drilling. The gas production would cover 6-17% of Germany's gas consumption.
