Heatwaves in Europe have led to the deaths of nearly 50,000 people in 2023. Southern European countries, such as Greece and Italy, have been the most affected. Rising temperatures, marine heatwaves, extreme drought, and violent fires have contributed to the high mortality rate. The continent is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world, as confirmed by Copernicus. Public Health France estimates 5,167 deaths in France alone during the summer of 2023. The Baltic countries have also experienced the impacts of heatwaves. While heat preparedness plans have helped reduce mortality, more proactive measures to combat global warming are urgently needed. The annual study conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health highlights the urgent need for action. Cities, where half of the world's population resides, are particularly vulnerable to the health risks posed by high temperatures. The urban heat island effect, which raises temperatures and disrupts sleep, has a significant impact on public health. Lack of sleep can lead to cognitive and physical impairment, and even accidents. It is crucial to prioritize green spaces and reduce traffic to mitigate the effects of heatwaves. Governments must take swift action to protect vulnerable populations and combat the increasing intensity and duration of heatwaves caused by climate change.
