Forest fires in Greece are spreading rapidly towards Athens due to strong winds. Efforts are being made by firefighters to contain the flames.

The European Union has deployed aircraft and firefighters from all over the bloc to help combat the forest fires in Greece and Albania, which are threatening the outskirts of the Greek capital. In the aftermath of the wildfires, one woman has been killed and dozens are injured.

Over 40,000 hectares have been burned, and thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes. Authorities are assessing the damage and preparing compensation plans.

More than 700 firefighters, 199 fire engines, and 35 specialized aircraft have been involved in the firefighting efforts. Several countries, including Italy, France, Serbia, Spain, Czech Republic, and Romania, have provided assistance to Greece, and the Greek Prime Minister has cut short his holiday to address the situation.
