Greece on Fire: Europe Mobilizes to Provide Aid

Large fires in Greece have destroyed facilities, causing residents to evacuate. International support has been provided by several European countries.

The EU has activated the rescEU and European Civil Protection Mechanism, mobilizing firefighting planes and helicopters. The EU is also allocating 600 million euros to strengthen the rescEU fleet.

Megafires in Southern Europe, particularly in Spain, Greece, and Portugal, are expected to worsen due to the climate crisis. The Mediterranean region is predicted to have the highest increase in fire risk, with the fire season extended by 12-22 days.

The annual cost for the Southern European region could reach 21 billion euros. Forest fires have also been reported in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania, with Albania seeking assistance from the EU.

Although wildfires can disrupt travel plans, travelers may be eligible for compensation or assistance, depending on their circumstances.
